The Bricks That Built the Houses

Last night I finished watching Stranger Things, which I liked a lot.

I also finished reading The Bricks That Built the Houses by Kate Tempest. It's about a group of twenty-somethings living in South London: aspiring dancer Becky, drug dealer Harry, and bitter, unemployed Pete, managing dead-end jobs, violent rivals, jealous partners and complex family and friendships as they try to escape their dull lives. An acclaimed poet, playwright and rapper, Kate Tempest writes beautiful and powerful prose, and this is a powerful, passionate and relevant novel. If you ever get the chance to see her live, go for it, because she is brilliant. I reviewed the book here:http://permanentlyweird.blogspot.co.uk/2016/10/the-bricks-that-built-houses-by-kate.html

Magazines and DVDs

Today was really long and really tiring. After work I picked up my groceries for the coming week and picked up the latest issues of SFX and Empire magazines.

I got the DVD box set of Doctor Who: The Black Guardian Trilogy which has three four part stories from the 1980s.

I watched another episode of Stranger Things on Netflix. I'm really starting to get into that show.

More Stranger Things

It was another long day at work. I was really tired by the end.

Back home I watched an episode of Stranger Things. I'm half way through it now, and the story's starting to pick up.

I'm watching an episode of Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads? which was a 1970s show about two best friends who reunite after one of them has been in the Army for five years. Despite playing best friends onscreen, the two lead actors, Rodney Bewes and James Bolam, apparently disliked each other during the filming of the show and now completely hate each other.

TV and Notebooks

Last night I watched a very interesting documentary called The Marvellous World of Roald Dahl and caught up on the latest episode of Preacher, which is a really good show. Later on I watched the second episode of Stranger Things.

My Dad came over and took me over to the Gyle shopping centre this morning. We stopped off at Starbucks first of all for something to eat. I had a raspberry cheesecake muffin which was really nice, and a mocha. Afterwards we split up and looked at our own things. I bought the latest issue of SFX magazine (a magazine about science-fiction, fantasy and horror), a drawing pad, a Moleskine notebook and a book journal (where you can note down about all the books you read). Dad and I went over to my parent's house. We had tacos for lunch. Later in the afternoon Dad gave me a lift back home.

Star Trek Beyond

I watched the first episode of a show on Netflix called Stranger Things. It's a science-fiction show set in the early 1980s about the disappearance of a boy that is seemingly linked to sinister Government experiments, and a strange telepathic girl. I really enjoyed it, it had the feel of vintage Steven Spielberg and Stephen King.

I went out to the movies today and saw Star Trek Beyond in which the Enterprise crew are pitted against a horde of hostile aliens who want control of an ancient alien artifact. It's a really fun film, that is true to the spirit of the original series, and has a few neat callbacks to the old series and a nice tribute to Leonard Nimoy, however it is it's own thing. It's definitely one of the better Star Trek films.
