Ghost Stories

Last night I watched a couple of the M. R. James ghost stories on TV. One of them was The Treasure of Abbott Thomas, about a historian who deciphers a series of cryptic clues in a church's stained glass window to find some buried treasure, however he very soon comes to wish he had paid attention to the warnings about the treasure's guardian. I also saw Whistle and I'll Come To You about an eccentric Cambridge professor who goes on holiday to a bleak English seaside resort. One day, while out walking he discovers an old whistle on top of a grave and, ignoring the warnings engraved on it about what the whistle will summon, he blows on it, and very quickly comes to regret it. They were good stories, and genuinely creepy in places.

Today was a fairly quiet day at work. A lot of people were leaving early to begin their holidays, and I have the feeling the office will be almost deserted tomorrow. I am only working a half day tomorrow and then I am off for my two week holiday, which I am looking forward to this year even more than usual. I really feel a need to relax and enjoy myself after the stresses of the past month or so.
