28 Days Later...

Last night I was watching 28 Days Later..., a 2002 film directed by Danny Boyle. The film opens with a raid by animal rights activists on a laboratory where chimpanzees have been infected with a "Rage" virus which causes extreme aggression and insane violence in the victim and is transmitted through blood and saliva. Twenty-eight days later, a man (played by Cillian Murphy) wakes up in a London hospital, to find the entire city seemingly deserted and devestated. He soon learns that the place is teeming with people infected by the "Rage" virus, while small groups of uninfected people fight a desperate battle for survival. The film is shot on digital video which gives quite a rough-edged docudrama feel to it all. It is one of the better horror movies of recent years, and is genuinely disturbing in places. After that I watched Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, which I thought was a lot of fun. I've seen it befroe, but I've not seen the other two in the series. I'm looking forward to seeing those.

This morning my Dad came around and we went over to the Gyle shopping mall. We had a coffee and a scone at the food court and then looked around at our own things. I got the book American Gods by Neil Gaiman in the new bookshop they've got there and got a large notebook in the WH Smiths there, which does have a fantastic stationary area and is also very good for magazines.

After that I went to my parent's house and gave my Dad his card and birthday present, which he seemed happy with. I gave him a book, which he was quite pleased about, I think, because they're going on holiday soon. The latest issue of Fortean Times magazine had arrived, the main features this month being about reports of big cats prowling around in Britain. For lunch we had roast chicken, stuffing, peas with miniature onions and baked potatoes, along with a slice of my Dad's birthday cake for dessert. In the afternoon, my Dad spent a while on his computer trying to fix his i-Pod. I tried to help him, but it just didn't seem to be working at all. I'll actually have to get my digital camera fixed, because I would like to use it. It's been broken for ages, but I've not got round to doing anything about it yet.
